Why licence renewals go wrong, and how to stop it

Renewal is not a form. It is a year of continuing education and a valid life-support certificate, checked at the last minute. Here is how to make it boring.

What the authority asks for

A CME completion certificate, a valid Emirates ID, a BLS or ACLS certificate, medical malpractice insurance, and for surgical specialties a surgical logbook. Practitioners over 60 add a physical and mental health report. The authority turns it around in eight working days.

Two of those cannot be rushed

CME hours accumulate across the licence year. You cannot manufacture them in the final week, and a practitioner who has not been sent on anything for eleven months is a renewal you are going to miss. A life-support certificate has its own expiry that rarely lines up neatly with the licence date, so it quietly lapses while everyone is watching the licence instead.

It is the facility’s job, not the doctor’s

The renewal is submitted from the facility’s portal account, and fees and any penalties are paid at the same step. For anything larger than a couple of clinicians this means renewal is an administrative function with a calendar behind it, not something each practitioner is expected to remember. When it is treated as the individual’s problem, someone always slips - and an expired practitioner is a compliance issue for the facility, not just an inconvenience for them.
